Speed Bumps

Hero

Speed bump installation in Aurora, IL keeps your parking lot safe for pedestrians, customers, and tenants. Speeding vehicles in commercial lots are a liability waiting to happen. One driver cutting through your parking lot at 30 miles per hour is all it takes for a serious accident involving a pedestrian, a shopping cart, or another vehicle. Properly placed speed bumps in parking lots slow traffic to a safe speed and give drivers a physical reason to pay attention.

Shamblin Paving is a full-service speed bump company with over 20 years of experience installing, repairing, and replacing speed bumps across Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Plainfield, and the western Chicago suburbs. Whether you need permanent asphalt speed bumps built into the lot, prefabricated rubber bolt-down units, or portable speed bumps for temporary traffic control, we handle every type of speed bump installation for commercial properties.

Permanent Asphalt Speed Bumps

Permanent asphalt speed bumps are the most durable and cost-effective option for commercial parking lots that need long-term traffic calming. These are built directly on the existing pavement surface using hot mix asphalt, shaped to the correct profile, and compacted to match the surrounding lot.

Asphalt speed bumps integrate seamlessly with the pavement. They do not shift, rattle, or come loose under heavy traffic the way bolt-down units can over time. They hold up through Aurora’s freeze-thaw cycles and snowplow passes without cracking or separating from the lot surface. And because they are made from the same material as the lot itself, they can be repaired, reshaped, or removed with standard paving equipment if your traffic patterns change.

We build permanent asphalt speed bumps to the height and width profile that matches your lot’s speed management needs. Standard commercial speed bumps are typically 3 to 4 inches high and 12 to 14 feet wide, designed to slow vehicles to 5 to 10 miles per hour. Speed humps, which are wider and more gradual, can also be constructed for areas where a gentler transition is needed, like main drive aisles or through-traffic lanes.

Prefabricated Rubber and Plastic Speed Bumps

Prefabricated speed bumps are modular units made from recycled rubber or heavy-duty plastic that bolt directly to the pavement surface. They come in interlocking sections that can be configured to any lane width and are available in high-visibility yellow and black striping.

Bolt-down speed bumps are a good option when you need a faster installation timeline, when the parking lot surface is concrete (where asphalt bonding is not possible), or when you want the ability to relocate or remove the speed bumps in the future without cutting into the pavement. They install in a few hours using concrete anchors or lag bolts and are ready for traffic immediately.

The tradeoff is longevity. Prefabricated units take a beating from snowplows, heavy trucks, and UV exposure over time. Bolts can loosen, sections can shift, and the rubber degrades after several years of Illinois weather. They typically need replacement or re-anchoring sooner than a permanent asphalt installation. We install, anchor, and maintain prefabricated speed bumps for properties that need this type of solution.

Portable Speed Bumps

Portable speed bumps are temporary traffic calming devices that sit on the pavement surface without anchoring. They are weighted rubber or plastic units that can be placed and removed as needed.

These work best for short-term situations. Construction zones where temporary traffic control is needed, special events where vehicle flow patterns change for a day or a weekend, or properties testing speed bump placement before committing to a permanent installation. Portable units are not designed for long-term use in high-traffic commercial lots. They move under repeated vehicle impact, do not hold up to snowplow contact, and lack the visibility and durability of permanently installed options.

We can supply and place portable speed bumps for temporary needs and help you plan the transition to a permanent solution when you are ready.

Speed Bump Repair and Replacement

Existing speed bumps take a beating. Asphalt speed bumps can crack, crumble at the edges, or lose height over time from constant vehicle impact and snowplow contact. Bolt-down rubber units loosen, shift, lose sections, and fade. Either way, a damaged speed bump is worse than no speed bump at all. It creates a hazard instead of preventing one.

We repair asphalt speed bumps by removing the damaged material, rebuilding the profile with fresh hot mix asphalt, and compacting it back to the correct height and shape. For rubber bolt-down units, we re-anchor loose sections, replace damaged or missing modules, and replace entire units when they have reached the end of their service life.

If your current speed bumps have been damaged beyond reasonable repair, or if they were installed in the wrong location and are not doing the job, we can remove them completely and install new ones in the right spots based on your lot’s actual traffic patterns.

Speed Bump Placement and Traffic Flow

Where you put speed bumps in parking lots matters just as much as the type you install. A speed bump in the wrong location creates driver frustration, bottlenecks, and drainage issues. In the right location, it controls speed exactly where it needs to be controlled.

The most effective placement points for commercial parking lots include pedestrian crossings and walkway intersections where foot traffic crosses vehicle lanes, drive aisle entrances and exits where vehicles transition between the lot and the street, loading dock and service vehicle areas where trucks and forklifts share space with passenger vehicles, and residential-adjacent lot boundaries where cut-through traffic is a problem.

We assess your lot’s traffic patterns, pedestrian flow, and problem areas before recommending placement. We also make sure speed bumps do not interfere with drainage by positioning them on high points or crowns in the pavement rather than in low spots where water collects.

For fire lane access, we leave gaps at the curb on both sides of the speed bump so emergency vehicles can pass without full impact. Proper placement keeps your lot safe without creating new problems.

Speed Bumps and Aurora's Winter Conditions

Any speed bump installer working in northern Illinois needs to account for snowplow compatibility. Aurora gets significant snowfall from November through March, and commercial lots get plowed frequently. Speed bumps that are too tall, too narrow, or poorly anchored get destroyed by plow blades within a single season.

Permanent asphalt speed bumps handle plowing better than any other option. Their sloped profile lets the plow blade ride over them without catching an edge, and because they are bonded to the lot surface, they do not shift or separate. We build our asphalt speed bumps with a gradual approach ramp on both sides specifically so plow operators can clear the area without damaging the bump or the blade.

For bolt-down rubber units, we use high-visibility yellow and black striped modules and mark the speed bump locations with reflective delineator posts so plow operators can see them in low-light conditions. Even with these precautions, bolt-down units will need more frequent maintenance and eventual replacement in markets with heavy plow activity like Aurora.
