Asphalt Milling
REQUEST A QUOTE
Asphalt milling in Aurora, IL is the first step in any quality resurfacing or full-depth pavement rebuild. Before new asphalt goes down, the old surface needs to come off cleanly and at the right depth. That is exactly what our cold milling crews do. We remove deteriorated pavement, correct surface grades, and prepare a bonded profile that new asphalt can lock into for a longer-lasting finished product.
Shamblin Paving is one of the most experienced asphalt milling contractors in the western Chicago suburbs, with over 20 years of commercial paving work across Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Plainfield, and surrounding communities. Whether you need precision milling ahead of a parking lot overlay or full-depth pulverizing for a complete base rebuild, our asphalt milling services cover the full scope of the job.
Cold Milling Services
Cold milling is the process of using a large drum-style milling machine fitted with carbide-tipped cutting teeth to grind and remove a controlled depth of existing asphalt pavement. The machine cuts anywhere from 1 inch to the full pavement depth depending on what the project requires.
This is not demolition. It is precision removal. The milling drum is set to an exact depth and grade, which means we can remove just the worn surface course while leaving a sound binder layer intact, or we can take the entire pavement section down to the aggregate base. The result is a uniform, textured surface with a consistent cross-slope that is ready for new asphalt or further base work.
Cold milling is the standard method used on parking lots, roadways, drive aisles, and loading areas across the Aurora area. It is fast, efficient, and creates far less disruption than traditional full-depth removal with excavators and haul trucks.

Pulverizing and Recycled Base Preparation
When a parking lot has failed beyond what milling and overlay can fix, but the existing material still has value, pulverizing is the cost-effective path to a full rebuild. Instead of hauling out tons of broken asphalt and importing all new aggregate, we pulverize the existing asphalt and base material in place using a reclaimer.
The machine grinds the old asphalt and underlying stone into a blended, compactable material called reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). This recycled base gets graded, moisture-conditioned, and compacted to create a stable subbase for the new pavement structure. The result is a stronger foundation that reuses what is already on site, cuts material and trucking costs, and reduces the amount of waste heading to a landfill.
Pulverized recycled base prep is especially useful on large commercial lots in the Aurora area where hauling costs add up fast and the existing material is still structurally usable. We test the compacted RAP base to verify it meets density and bearing requirements before any new asphalt is placed on top.
When You Need Asphalt Milling
Not every paving project requires milling, but most commercial resurfacing and reconstruction projects do. Here are the most common situations where asphalt milling is the right call:
Mill and Overlay is the most frequent use. We mill the top 1.5 to 3 inches of worn asphalt to remove surface defects, restore proper drainage grades, and create a bonded surface for the new overlay. This is the standard approach for parking lots that are 15 to 20 years old with surface deterioration but a solid base underneath.
Full-Depth Removal is needed when the pavement has failed through the entire asphalt section. We mill down to the aggregate base or subgrade, then rebuild from there. This is common on lots with extensive alligator cracking, base failure, or drainage problems that cannot be solved with an overlay alone.
Grade Corrections come up when a lot has uneven areas, birdbaths, or drainage issues caused by settling or poor original construction. Milling allows us to selectively remove material and re-establish the correct slope without tearing out the entire lot.
Utility Work and Transitions require precision milling at specific locations. When utility cuts, curb replacements, or pavement tie-ins need a clean edge and a smooth transition to the existing surface, milling gives us that control.
Aurora Paving Specs and Milling Standards
The City of Aurora follows IDOT specifications for all asphalt construction and removal. Milling work on or near public right-of-way requires a contractor license and paving permit through the Building and Permits Division.
IDOT standards require that milled surfaces maintain proper cross-slope for drainage and that any transitions where new pavement meets existing pavement follow District 1 butt joint and HMA taper details. On public roads, the milled surface must be clean and free of loose material before any overlay is placed, and a bituminous tack coat must be applied at the correct residual asphalt rate to ensure proper bonding.
For commercial lots, the city requires proof-rolling of the base course after milling when the full pavement section has been removed. Our crews are familiar with these requirements and coordinate all inspections and scheduling with the city so your project stays on track and passes every checkpoint.

Our Asphalt Milling Process
- Pavement Assessment We evaluate the existing lot to determine the right milling depth, identify areas of base failure, and plan the most efficient milling pattern for the project.
- Cold Milling Our milling machine removes the specified depth of asphalt in a single pass. The milled material is loaded directly into haul trucks for recycling or stockpiled on site for use as recycled base.
- Sweeping and Cleanup After milling, we sweep the entire surface to remove loose material and millings. A clean, textured surface is critical for proper tack coat adhesion and overlay bonding.
- Base Evaluation Once the old asphalt is removed, we inspect the exposed base for soft spots, moisture damage, or clay contamination. Any problem areas get repaired before the next phase of construction.
- Coordination with Paving Milling is almost always the lead-in to an overlay, resurfacing, or full rebuild. We coordinate our milling schedule tightly with the paving crew so the exposed surface is not left open to weather or traffic longer than necessary.
